[Now that those are out of the way, Luke rests his chin in his hand and stares off to the side, lost in thought. The thing he wanted to talk to Ion about... It's been weighing heavily on his mind ever since he heard it. Luke isn't sure what to think of it, or even how to feel about it. There's a sort of happiness inside him, sure, but... he can't deny the hesitation and confusion he feels. So, after a few minutes, he opens up the journal again to ask the general populace:]

What do you think it means to have a soul?

[She's going to stop right there for a few minutes to look through the other answers. Because now she wants to know.

He didn't think he had a soul? Why? ...on second thought, maybe she shouldn't ask.] It's hard to define something like that, isn't it? People are giving you so many different answers.

I'm kind of getting an idea, but... you're right, it is pretty hard. I just wanted to see what everyone else thought. It's... different from what I used to think.

What did you used to think it was?

That people were born with it. That it stays inside them while they live... And when they die, it still goes on. Looking back on it now, it does seem too simple.

[...] That's the same thing I thought.

It's easy to think of that way, isn't it?

But now I know I've got one. So... maybe it isn't like that.

Probably not. [That's right. Something like a soul--it's more complicated than that. But even so, what about...?

...nevermind. There's no way.] Um... I'm sorry for asking, but... how did you find out you had one?

There's this girl who sees souls... Her name's Cheyenne. She saw mine and told me about it.

It was... kind of scary, actually, figuring out I had one all this time.

She can see souls...? That's amazing. [...wait.] But why were you scared when you found out? Did you not want one?

... I don't know. I kept wondering what it meant for someone like me to have a soul... I've never really thought about it before. I always thought I just... didn't have one. It was kind of overwhelming, you know?

["Someone like me"?]

...yeah. I think I can see why. You believe you're one thing and then suddenly... you find out you've been wrong this whole time. [It is pretty scary, isn't it?]

[And that... makes him think of another instance. He smiles a little - a wry, tight one.]

When you put it like that... This the second time that's happened to me. The first time was a lot worse, though.

[...] I'm sorry. It sounds like you've gone through a tough time.

It's okay. I guess I can say I'm used to it now?

[Oh god, Luke, she feels horrible. She is not good at this making people feel better sort of thing.

But strangely, she's feeling a sense of familiarity from him from what he's been saying. Part of her wants to ask, but she knows there's no way she could go about doing something like that.] ...My name is Noel. What's yours?

[It's kind of nice to meet someone who had a similar view on souls and the like - even seemed to relate a little, by her first response to him. He smiles slightly, a real one this time.]

I'm Luke. It's nice to meet you... I usually don't ask about stuff like this.

[She smiles back.] It's nice to meet you, too, Luke. To tell you the truth, I liked seeing some of the answers people gave. It just goes to show there's a lot the two of us still need to learn, I guess.

Yeah, it does. But we learn something new every day, right?

Still... Now I think I'm getting a new idea on what souls are.
