[Now that Luke can stay awake for more than an hour, he'd really like to get back to the people of Auldrant as well as the friends he made here in Luceti. He still can't hear anything, but... well, maybe no one has to know that. As long as they don't try talking to him, he'll be fine.

And being bedridden for these past few days has been extremely boring.

So, he grabs his journal and writes.]

Hey... I'm back.

[... Yup. Not much to expand on there. So let's go on.]

Anyone have any good stories to tell? Or... Actually, what's the most fun you've ever had? Here or in your world.

[... It must've been embarrassing. As much as Luke's dying to know, and that much can be seen by the smile on his face, Ion's kind enough to write and not make too big of a deal out of his loss, so he'll try to let it go with a wave of his hand and a chuckle.]

Okay, okay, you don't have to tell me what it was. Were there any funny ones?

[He'll look back and laugh about it someday. Just give it a few decades. Unfortunately, he was far too ashamed of it to really go outside much... oh! But he can say what the others in the house wore, right?]

"Give me a second."

[Since descriptions were no fun, clearly the answer was he should draw what they were wearing! There's only one issue with this: Ion can't draw. In fact, he can't recall a time when he ever tried.]

[Which probably explains the look on his face when he looks up from the paper and lets Luke take a look. At least the names indicate they're of Anise, Nephry, and Dist. There was no other way to tell otherwise!]

"Okay, maybe I should have just described them instead..."

[Oh, Luke draws about the same way. He waves his hand to indicate that it's not a big deal, and it's probably better than he would've done, and he just grins at the costumes.]

Heh! That really suits Anise, doesn't it?

[... Wait.]

... When did Dist get here?

[Yup. Luke's spent all this time here and had no IDEA Dist was around. Failure.]

[This face, Luke. Just this face.]

"He's been here for awhile now. A few months before you got here. He lives with us."

[And after a moment, he adds on another piece of paper (knowing Luke might still think of Dist as just their enemy):] "It's complicated."

[And right when Luke was about to ask about Dist living with them. Well, now he feels kind of dumb. B-But hey, it's not his fault that no one told him he was here and that Dist never contacted him or... anything!]

... And you're still okay? [Because, well. He is the enemy.]

[A nod and a smile.] "Dist is"

[How to put this?]

"Dist is different from how you and I remember him. He came here from farther in the future than us. He even apologized for" [Naturally he's glossing over that specific thing he apologized for.] "all the things he did."

[Man, was everyone from his future? Still, Luke looks like he understands, as he lets out a soft "Oh" and nods. The look on his face suggests that he feels very sorry for Ion, but it can't be helped. If Dist apologized and is actually a good guy now, then he shouldn't be a problem.

He then reaches out to take Ion's notebook (after raising his eyebrows in permission, of course) and frowns as he draws something. Upon completion, there's a rather stick-figurish drawing of Asch in this outfit, with a grumpy >:( face and everything, though Luke makes sure to write "Asch" at the bottom.]

[Ion leans over curiously as Luke starts to draw and is completely surprised when he sees a drawing of... a woman? Or wait. It's labelled "Asch".]

[Oh, he can't help but giggle at that. He takes the pen and writes beside the drawing.]

"Poor Asch. He must have hated it."

[Luke grins and, though it'd be easier to talk, he feels like writing with Ion. It just kind of seems fun, that's all. He takes the pen and writes underneath Ion's writing, taking note of the fact that it looks so much neater than his own.]

"He'd try to take the ribbon off every time he stepped outside!"

[~~Because these two are basically giggling schoolgirls exchanging notes in class~~ Ion doesn't mind writing back and forth at all! Especially if it's what Luke wants to do.]

"If only it had been that easy to get rid of the costumes."

[At that moment, however, he has a thought.]

"How did you know what Asch's costume looked like?"

[~~Well they are pretty much little kids~~ Urk. Luke freezes for a moment, but then he tries to wave it off. It probably wouldn't do to go proclaiming to everyone that he and Asch were kind of one for a while.]

... Natalia told me.

[Cool story bro, but Ion isn't buying it. He isn't sure why Luke would feel the need to lie, so he's not completely sure whether Luke is doing so or not, but...]

"She must have explained it pretty well then." [After all, the details in that drawing were amazi- okay, well, compared to his own attempts, the details were amazing.]

W-Well, you know how she is...! [Pity that Luke is even worse of a liar than Pinocchio. He's not sure where he's trying to go with this; Maybe they gossiped about it together...?]

[Luke is lucky Ion isn't the pushy-type. As obvious as it is that Luke is lying, Ion still isn't going to call him out on it. After all, he must have a good reason for it.]

"Of course."

[See, the thing with Ion is that if Luke manages to successfully lie to him without any sort of backlash, he starts to feel bad for it. Luke looks away and rubs at his neck, although he glances at Ion every now and then just to make sure he isn't trying to talk or anything. He'd never know with his hearing gone...

After a moment, he sighs.]

... A-Asch made our minds join up again while I was with the Malnosso. You know, like back in Yulia city? He did it to protect me.

[If Luke was expecting some kind of extreme reaction to this reveal, he'll be sorely disappointed. Ion just stares at Luke for a moment or two before letting out a small sigh of relief.]

"Why didn't you just tell me that in the first place?"

[... Now that he thinks about it, he isn't so sure. Luke glances at him, shoulders bunched up a bit with nervousness from before, then lets out a little laugh as he starts to loosen himself up.]

I don't know... I guess it's because Asch didn't want anyone to know while it was happening. And I was with him for a few days, so... It kind of rubbed off on me, you know?

[That brings a smile back to Ion's face.] "That was a very kind thing for Asch to do. I'm glad you didn't have to spend all that time alone."

[Or rather, he's glad Luke wasn't conscious the whole time they were experimenting on him.]

Yeah, just don't tell him that. [He just knows that Asch would come up with some excuse, and that Luke would believe it, and the thought of Asch protecting him would be whisked away in favor of some stupid little reason.

Now that they're on this topic, Luke starts to think about it some more. He kind of misses Asch and all, now that he's away from him after being with him 24/7.]

We... protected each other, sort of. I could tell when all those... things weren't real. I couldn't see a lot of it. My body came back when it was over, and he still kept me with him until I was healed.

[Pause, then he gives a forced little smile as he rubs one of his ears.] Well, mostly.

[Ion manages to return that smile, but finds it a little difficult following that "until I was healed" remark. Luke must have been in bad shape for Asch to refrain from sending him back right away, on top of the loss of his hearing. That makes his next remark all the more difficult to write:]

"I don't mean to imply in any way that being kidnapped is a good thing-" [On the contrary: just the idea of it left a bad taste in his mouth.] "-but I am relieved you didn't have to completely experience what happened last week. I pray the next few weeks will be more peaceful."

[Luke doubts that. He'd rather completely experience everything, even facing the illusion of all the people he'd killed in Akzeriuth or anything as long as he didn't have to go back to that place. With all those sounds, he felt like every fonon in his body was racing out of control, crashing and colliding and causing pain and exhaustion like he'd never felt before-

But he shakes his head to himself. It's fine now. He's back, and he's okay. And that Halloween experiment is over, so there's no point in talking about it. You can't walk forward while looking back, after all.]

"I think they will be. For everyone else, too."

[The choice between two evils was never an easy one. Ion smiles and nods to Luke's reply before looking up at him, wondering what to say back. He certainly didn't want to keep talking about this subject, but with his mind already there, it was difficult to just jump into something less painful...]

[And so, almost without thinking, he randomly draws something down on the paper.]

[Luke stares at that for a second before he looks over at Ion with a smirk.]

You're asking for it, Ion! I'm a master at tic-tac-toe!

[And he'll take up Ion's challenge by drawing in a circle.]
